UKAdapta March 10 Update

"I've always enjoyed art from an early age. Like many others, I messed up at school academically and directed most of my energy into art. Around the age of 13, I had my first tag, not understanding the idea behind it, I tagged my initials…this didn’t last too long for obvious reasons!!"
Graffiti & Fine Art are two skills that this man has in abundance and UKAdapta predict a very bright future for Bill London.

Highly acclaimed DJ, producer, club pioneer Erol Alkan set up his own label ‘Phantasy Sound’ in 2007, since then they have been releasing sought-after singles including Riton & Primary 1’s. As he is one of the most influential figures of the recent electro music scene, we might tend to imagine that it would focus on that side, and expect the music from his label to be dance orientated, club-friendly tunes…

Gill Wing jewellery opened over 12 years ago in a small boutique on Upper Street. ?It was an opportunity to showcase the elite of contemporary jewellery design and run very much like a gallery space. It had a very cosy and intimate feel. After many successful years the opportunity arose to move to a larger venue at 182 Upper Street. The current shop has architect designed cabinets and features the most sought after designs in contemporary jewellery.

Alsop is a company that likes to describe itself as an office that works with multi-disciplinary roles like Architecture, Master Planning, Product Design and even Illustrative & Animation works in the past. It’s this kind of diversity, cross-fertilisation and looking at many disciplines that helps us to become better designers.

I write Sickboy and have been painting since 1995, although I only started using the name Sickboy in 2000. I used to write Phet; this was my bombing name and I took it from the word 'amphetamine', I had an idea just before the millenium that I wanted to have a battle with myself, so rather than someone else going over my pieces, I went over them myself....

UKAdapta January 10 Update

Mutate Britain aims to take art out of the gallery and into the city - where it reaches and entertains a much broader swathe of society. Their governing principle began with Joe Rush and the Mutoid Waste Company -mixing art into a bigger event and making sure everyone enjoys it. We took Artist Liaison Officer, Jo Dunne out of her busy schedule to explain to us what makes this event so special and why the general public have nothing but positivity for their project.

Tristan Schoonraad has probably one of the most interesting backstories to an artist that we have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Working in Hollywood in the Special Effects & Make-Up departments from a young age has allowed this man the rare opportunity to work behind the scenes in many incredible movies, such as Rambo, Troy, Harry Potter, Saving Private Ryan & Gladiator. His deep knowledge of casting and moulding near perfect creations of humans, monsters & even aliens gives him the perfect springboard with which to launch his newfound career as a Fine Artist. UKAdapta predict that Schoonraad will be a key player in the artworld in the next decade and remember; you heard it here first.

Rabodiga is an artist that really caught my eye this year for two reasons; one is that her can skills have really progressed over the years and the other is for the simple reason that there seems to be a distinct lack of Brit female artists working on the streets in the UK. This latter reason intrigued me because Rabodiga is Spanish and has lived on and off in London for about one year, meaning that she can't even be considered as a British artist. Fortunately, I had the chance to meet with her in person as she had some work in an incredible group show this past Nov called ‘Shades Of Things To Come'. Fast forward to three days later and we are sitting in a cafe chatting about the weather and why it's getting harder to paint in London..

The era of the noughties has sadly come to an end, but it also brings with it much hope, anticipation and expectation for art in the future decade. We have witnessed the rise of the art gallery as a place of sanctuary for those looking to have some form of experience. As Francesca Gavin of Dazed once said, "The Tate Modern has become like a modern-day cathedral; attracting people from all over the country to meet in its hallowed halls." This vast museum first opened its doors to the general public in 2000 and has been exemplary in showing us that Modern & Contemporary Art is for the masses now and is both more understandable and infinite in its possibilities.

UKAdapa December 09 Update

Claudio Ethos hails from Sao Paolo, Brazil and his artistic history starts from very humble beginnings. From painting in the classic Brazilian style of Pichacao, to his current surrealist self, Ethos continues to push the creative envelope. His choice of using just stark black and white in his work brings his work to a more dramatic level, where the 'distraction' of colours cannot be employed.

I had arranged to meet Lucas Price the day before his solo show opening at Black Rat Press Gallery. The great thing about this interview was the fact that it didn't feel like an interview at all. It was more like meeting an old friend to give them support on an artistic endeavour. Sometimes, this can be the best situation for a bit of Q & A, as the answers you often tend to get are a lot more honest and heartfelt.
I love how Lucas is able to produce works that stylistically, are worlds apart from each other, yet all created by the same hand.

Mixing melodic folk with banging electro... 2 completely different genres? Such a combination is likely to have already been somewhere in the recent music scenes where anything goes, but surprisingly, I haven’t heard music like this before. Beautiful acoustic guitar melodies and pleasant vocals on prominent songwriting interwoven with dynamic electro beats... all sounds rather new. James Yuill has established his own unique view of the world, which he describes as the happy marriage between the electronic and the organic worlds.

Sarah Pulvertaft's work and working processes have evolved over the years. She began at the fashion end of the spectrum, designing two collections of jewellery a year and exhibiting at London Fashion Week and exporting to the US and Japan. She now works also at the other end of the spectrum creating pieces that are exploratory and evolve more gradually.

321 Solstice Show Hong Kong

Our fourth project follows closely on the heels of the Tokyo show. This time, back to Hong Kong, in association with the Schoeni Gallery, we will be curating a show called 321 Solstice. The show starts on November 17th, (the 321st day of the calendar year) with a live art demonstration by Graphic Airlines, which leads up to the event opening November 19th and welcoming in the winter solstice. A time when creatives take refuge from the cold, in the warmth of their studios, where they can finally get back to the business of creating! This year, we have collected 10 artists from the UK, USA & Hong Kong; Bill London (UK), Cept (UK), David Bray (UK), Friendly Liu (HK), Graphic Airlines (HK), Jon Burgerman (UK), L1ES ONE (HK), Phil Ashcroft (UK), Swoon (USA), Vesna Parchet (UK).

It has been alot of hard work, but we feel that it has all been worth it with the line up of artists we have showing this year. Adapta has handpicked some of the finest talents from a broad spectrum of artistic skills; illustration, graffiti, streetart and graphic design are all backgrounds these artists possess.
