Good Times Big Squat

Sorry for the lack of posts by me in the last couple days. I have been painting with a bunch of mates at a huge squat in London Fields in preparation of a big Dubstep/Jungle Rave this evening...I will be posting better pics of the whole squat in the next week.

The amazing Russian Matryoshka dolls

31 renowned fashion designers around a single task: recreate the legendary Matryoshka dolls for the tenth anniversary celebration of the Russian Vogue. After an invitation from the magazine's editor in chief, Aliona Doletskaya - who, some say, is one of the few executives in the magazine who can be considered a human being - important names like Prada, Moschino, Saint Laurent, Armani, Dolce&Gabana, Oscar de La Renta, among others, explored a cutting-edge approach to the task, producing small, contemporary works of art, filled with a cultural connection between Russia's past and present.

Each brand produced a sketch, which were then handed over to some of the best craftsmen in the country and produced in wood, measuring 50 cm in height and 60 cm in diameter. The dolls were then hand-painted according to the drawings.

It was its quick popularity and wide spread that made the Matryoshka dolls one of Russia's most prevailing symbols. The first dolls are credited to Sergei Maliutin, dating back to 1890. Inspired by the Japanese wood dolls, he drew a project of one that would have typical clothes and appearance. They were eight small peasants that followed a concept already well known in the country, of hollow objects which contain similar ones inside in progressively smaller sizes (take the Fabergè eggs, for instance).

Those small objects travelled through an entire century, adapting themselves to historic demands - such as matryoshkas portraying leaders like Krushchev and Lenin, educational, decorative or commemorative demands, such as Russian Vogue's; this shows their the infinite ability to adapt themselves and the many interpretations they can have, remaining, at the same time, unchanged and never out of date. About the collection, Aliona Doletskaya said: each matryoshka is unique and a work of art in itself. Landmark, sculpture, work of art - you can call it whatever you like.

The Bays & The Heritage Orchestra

This was an incredible bit of Music-Making history! Electronic-Improvisation group, The Bays teamed up with the Heritage Orchestra to perform together live at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.


"Every writer has to face the challenge of the blank page. Tonight, that's what the audience faces - a blank score, displayed on three large screens behind the silent players of the Heritage Orchestra. The two "live composers", John Metcalfe and Simon Hale, have only just begun, quickly writing notes using score-writing software. A solo flute plays, while, on screen, the pages fill up with long notes, and conductor Jules Buckley cues the strings. The music grows slowly from these repeated sections, and then the Bays join in.

The idea is as simple - and as technologically, mind-bogglingly complicated - as that. Composers write notes; musicians, reading from individual LCD screens, play them. The Bays (drums, bass and two keyboards) improvise rhythm section parts that in turn prompt Metcalfe (strings) and Hale (winds) to write new motifs and themes: both composers have perfect pitch." -Words VIA

The Beauty of Silence

The appeal of the West Coast lies in the great expanses of the landscape, the stark simplicity that is so easy to find around here. Follow our coast and you will see long stretches of pristine and lonely beaches. Sometimes there might be a man and his dog, a solitary angler, a backpacker!

Because it is winter here, I make use of photos taken by guest photographers. Today you meet the vibrant and well-known Yzerfontein personality, Mary Ann Bosch. She is an elegant and charismatic lady, darting around chatting, cooking and serving diners in their restaurant, Kaijaiki! She runs a B&B too. Because of her deep empathy with the human condition, she studies hard to be a life coach and will soon graduate in her course in Counselling and Communication. Her plan is open her own clinic in her peaceful seaside home near Yzerfontein. Also, with her first professional assignment as photographer, a Saldanha Bay wedding within a few months, she will once again have her hands full!

Busy, busy!!But to bring her whole being into balance , Mary Ann steps out on the beach with her camera, loving the early mornings and the time of dusk. She replenishes her soul in line with her motto: "I cannot give when I am empty." I thank her for the inspiration for this painting, from her photo of Langebaan lagoon that speaks so well of the "beauty of silence".
